Meru MCAs Outraged by Court’s Decision to Shield Governor Kawira Mwangaza

Meru Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) have condemned a High Court ruling that extended Governor Kawira Mwangaza’s stay in office.

Justice Bahati Mwamuye blocked the Senate’s impeachment decision for 120 days, sparking anger among leaders who accuse the judiciary of shielding the embattled governor from accountability.

Why Court Ruling Sparks Outrage Among Meru MCAs

The High Court’s decision came as a blow to Meru MCAs, who expected the impeachment process to remove Governor Mwangaza from office.

Justice Mwamuye ruled that public interest justified the extension, arguing that overturning the orders could nullify the petition if Mwangaza wins her case. However, MCAs see the ruling as a betrayal. Joseph Njuki, MCA for Mwangathia Ward, did not mince words.

“This decision is a slap in the face of justice. The people of Meru followed due process, yet the courts handed Mwangaza an undeserved lifeline,” he said.

Njuki likened the situation to systemic bias, saying, “This ruling reminds us of past injustices. When Kindiki was sworn in, we saw the same pattern. It’s time Kenyans who value justice rise and stand with Meru.”

Allegations of Political Protection

Patrick Mutuma, Meru’s County Assembly Majority Leader, accused higher powers of shielding Mwangaza. He claimed that Deputy President Kindiki was behind the delays.

“We’ve fought for justice, yet we now realize Mwangaza is backed by powerful forces,” Mutuma said. “The impeachment of Rigathi Gachagua was rushed through like it was a stolen bicycle. But here in Meru, we see delays and protection for Mwangaza. Why the double standards?”

Mutuma called the ruling an affront to the people of Meru, describing Mwangaza’s continued leadership as a symbol of failed governance and systemic oppression.

A Tarnished Governor Protected by Power

Governor Kawira Mwangaza’s controversial tenure has faced three impeachment attempts, with the latest on August 21 resulting in overwhelming Senate support for her removal.

She was found guilty on charges of constitutional violations, abuse of office, and other misconduct. Despite these charges, Mwangaza’s stay in office continues, protected by a court order that delays justice.

The people of Meru remain in limbo, their calls for accountability overshadowed by political interference.

Will the judiciary and the government answer their cries, or is Meru doomed to endure more failed leadership? The clock ticks as the court order shields Mwangaza for another 120 days.
