Martha Karua has already levelled very serious accusations against Uganda’s General Court Martial (Militar) in Kampala for how they handled the legal team for Kizza Besigye.
She went on to name the harassment and obstructions that have prevented their team from working as a whole including a colleague who was violently attacked in court.
Challenging Legal Representation
On Tuesday Karua added, citing the difficulties her team was experiencing by prolonging her access to the courtroom and her tools to get inside.
Her allegations, she said, were not in accordance with previously permitting standards.
“There have been so many hurdles put in our way from the get-go that we are already tired and sat out of representing our client,” Karua stated.
She told of another attack saying, “An assault on one of our team members, realized in this court. We feel safe under your law, and yet for some reason today this safety is now not there.
Call for Fair Consideration
Karua asked the court to observe proper legal procedures when dealing with possible misconduct by the legal team.
She criticized the changing rules and carping ways of treating them, which she said are denying them a fair chance of representation.
This is preventing their client from attracting a fair defence.
Temporary Lawyer License in Uganda
Karua’s comments came just after she received her temporary practising certificate from the Uganda Law Society upon reapplication.
The Law Society took charge, and this time permitted her to represent Besigye in court after her first application had been turned down.
Uganda Law Society said on January 6 that The Law Council has granted a Temporary Practicing Certificate to Hon. Martha Karua.
Besigye’s Law Firm
On November 25th, 2024, officials confirmed that Karua now leads Besigye’s legal campaign following his abduction in Nairobi.
Authorities captured him while he was travelling to Uganda to pick up his wife.
This was after attending the launch of Karua’s book, Against The Tide.
They have charged him with illegally possessing a firearm and ammunition.
Conclusion
Even as the trial goes on, Karua continues to stress the need for adherence to legal decorum and justice for her client.
Her experience in Uganda portrays the difficulties that legal practitioners face.
Especially when dealing with high-profile cases, and sensitive politically related issues.
